QuarantineQuarantine is one of the methods which the UK Government currently uses to prevent the introduction of rabies and other animal diseases into the UK. Since February 2000 the government has operated the "PETS" scheme which initially allowed animals from some Western European Countries to enter the UK without quarantine. From 31 January 2001 the scheme was extended to cover a number of Long Haul Island Countries. From 11 December 2002 the scheme was extended to cover Canada and the USA. On 3 July 2004 European Union Regulations on the non-commercial movement of pet animals, were introduced. These regulations are intended to harmonise arrangements across the European Union and add further qualifying countries to the PETS scheme. Animals must meet a number of stringent requirements to qualify for PETS. All other animals, including those from Europe or the Long Haul Islands which do not fully meet the new requirements, can only be brought into the country with a valid import licence and must, by law, undergo six months quarantine, regardless of their country of origin. Failure to comply with these regulations can lead to a heavy fine, imprisonment and the possible destruction of your pet. The prospect of quarantine can be worrying for many pet owners but we hope that the information available in these pages will help to allay those fears. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs produce a code of practice for Quarantine Kennels. A copy is available from the Department. An extract can be seen by clicking here. We welcome your inspection of our cattery and kennels at the following times: |
